Hillwalking

As one of the additional options for Explorer Scouts, Ranger Guides, Young Leaders and other Scouts over 14, it is hoped to offer two separate days hill-walking during Cumbaree. The activity will have to be pre-booked, and will be an alternative to the core programme provision during the day-time on Sunday 28th July and Friday 2nd August. Participants should be back in camp in time to join in the evening camp programme.

On the Sunday, it is hoped to walk in the Howgills - the outlying area of hills to the East of the Lake District which have been used for the Karrimor International Mountain Marathon. On the Friday, it is hoped to offer older or more experienced participants the opportunity of walking in the Lake District hills above Coniston; and the Howgills may be visited again.

Howgills by Cautley

Each hill-walking party will consist of a maximum of 6 Cumbaree participants, with a leader holding the Scout Association's authorisation for hill-walking. In the Howgills, the aim will be to have a fairly easy day's hill-walking, visiting the highest summit: the day will be planned to suit any reasonably fit 14+ year old, and will not require any previous hill-walking experience. It will be suitable for beginners. The walking in the hills above Coniston in the Lake District will be slightly more strenuous, and will be aimed at 16+ year olds and those with some previous hill walking experience. All party leaders will be entitled at their own discretion, and in the interests of the party and its safety, to ask a individual participant to remain on-site rather than going hill-walking, and at any time to adapt the day's walking to the capabilities of the party and the prevailing conditions.

There are no personal pre-requisites for participation other than a reasonable level of physical fitness, but each participant will be required to have a minimum level of personal clothing and equipment. The minimum requirements will be ;

  • Boots for walking in (trainers will not be acceptable),
  • Suitable long-sleeved shirt and long trousers, A short-sleeved shirt and shorts may be worn, but a long-sleeved shirt and long trousers must then be carried: jeans will not be acceptable.
  • A decent waterproof outer garment
  • spare warm top.
  • A hat & gloves are optional, but may be useful.
  • Each participant must have a light rucsac or haversac in which to carry his/her food, drink, and spare clothing (plus camera etc as desired).

Map extracts will be provided. As mentioned above, this activity option will require pre-booking - by Friday 31st May. If there are more applicants for the option than the number of authorised hill-walking leaders available can accept, places will be allocated to international campers first, and on a 'first come, first served' basis.
